There is not any solid rule for selection of eye shadows. You just have to select shades according to your eyes and dress color.
Pearly shades
These shades are used to give eyes bigger look by highlighting eyebrow bones. Do not use too much pearly eye shadows if there are small lines of wrinkles around your eyes.
Matt shades
These shades are used to give a smooth touch. Dark shades are used for very big eyes to make them look normal. Similarly light shades are used for small or deep set eyes to make them look wide and big. You can also do experiments by mixing some pearly shade on matt shades.
